Does Claude cite sources?
Yes. Per Anthropic's documentation, citations are always enabled for Claude's web search. When Claude searches, it retrieves pages and attaches a citation to each claim it makes, including the source URL, the title, and the exact cited text, up to 150 characters. Every citation shows the sentence Claude's answer came from, not only a link to the page.
One nuance: Claude only searches, and therefore only cites, when the answer needs it. Recent events, prices, statistics, and details about specific companies trigger a search. Stable facts, math, and creative tasks do not, because Claude answers those from training. What sources does Claude cite most?
First-party brand and company domains, by a wide margin. In an Otterly study of 379,321 Claude citations across 16,406 domains in June 2026, company and product domains made up 64.0% of citations, more than four times news and media at 14.9%. Why Reddit and social do almost nothing for Claude
Social is a rounding error for Claude. It made up 0.9% of citations, and within that thin slice Reddit received zero, while LinkedIn accounted for most of it. That is the exact opposite of Perplexity, where Reddit is roughly one in five citations. Very, and in an unexpected way. Claude does not concentrate on a small club of elite domains. Its top 10 domains account for just 9.5% of all citations, and 32.9% of cited domains appear only once. It pulls from thousands of sources while still favoring authority. The practical read: there is no gatekeeper list to crack, so a well-built, authoritative site has a real path to being cited.

In the same research, only 13% of cited domains were shared between them, because ChatGPT leans on community content while Claude prioritizes first-party material. How do you get cited by Claude?
Make your own domain the authoritative source. Cover your topics with real depth rather than single thin pages, keep facts fresh with visible dates and quarterly refreshes, and add original data and statistics Claude can quote. Keep those facts consistent across your site, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, G2, and Wikidata, because Claude rewards a coherent, verifiable record.
