ChatGPT SEO: how to get cited in ChatGPT

ChatGPT does not read Google. It reads Bing. That one fact changes your whole playbook for getting cited in the answer 900 million people see each week.

TL;DR
ChatGPT Search retrieves the web through Bing, not Google, then writes an answer and cites a few sources. ChatGPT SEO is getting your page into that answer. Get indexed and ranking in Bing first, use IndexNow to speed it up, lead every section with the answer, and build presence on Wikipedia and Reddit, the two domains it cites most. Then measure your share of citations.

ChatGPT does not read Google. It reads Bing.

That one fact reorders your whole plan. ChatGPT SEO is the work of getting your pages mentioned and cited inside ChatGPT answers, not ranked on Google. When ChatGPT searches the web, it retrieves pages primarily through Microsoft Bing, writes an answer, and cites a handful of sources. You win by being one of those sources, which means being in Bing, leading with the answer, and showing up where ChatGPT already looks.

What is ChatGPT SEO?

ChatGPT SEO is optimizing your content to be cited as a source inside ChatGPT answers. Unlike Google, ChatGPT does not hand the user ten blue links. When its search feature is triggered, it retrieves live pages, writes a synthesized answer, and footnotes the sources it used. Your goal moves from ranking first to being one of the few pages it quotes and names.

The audience is why this matters. OpenAI said ChatGPT passed 900 million weekly active users in early 2026, up from 800 million the previous October. That is a search surface the size of a major engine, and it answers many questions without a single click to your site.

How does ChatGPT choose which sources to cite?

ChatGPT chooses sources by retrieving through Bing, then favoring the clearest answer on the page. Its search feature pulls live results from Bing plus data partners, so Bing rankings shape the candidate pool. Seer Interactive found that 87% of ChatGPT Search citations matched Bing top organic results, versus 56% for Google. If you are not in Bing, you are not in the running.

Bing is the gate. Your Google ranking does not open it.

Once you are in the pool, position on the page decides a lot. A study of 1.2 million AI answers by Kevin Indig found that 44.2% of ChatGPT citations came from the first 30% of a page, and that definition-style and question-based passages got cited far more often. ChatGPT reaches for the top of your page, so the answer has to be there.

How do you get cited by ChatGPT?

To get cited by ChatGPT, get into Bing first, then make your page the easiest answer to quote. Index and rank in Bing, push new pages with IndexNow, lead each section with a direct answer, and build presence on Wikipedia and Reddit, its two most-cited domains. The order matters: Bing is the gate, structure is the lift, and third-party authority is the slow compounding win.

Five steps to get cited by ChatGPT: get indexed and ranking in Bing, push pages with IndexNow, lead each section with a direct answer, build Wikipedia and Reddit presence, and earn third-party authority.
Each step maps to how ChatGPT actually retrieves and quotes.

Work it in this order.

Start with Bing, because nothing else counts if you are not in the index. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and confirm Bingbot is not blocked by your firewall or robots rules.

Then speed it up with IndexNow. It is Bing open protocol for pushing new and updated URLs in real time instead of waiting for a crawl, and it cuts indexing lag from weeks to days. Many SEO plugins ship it built in.

Now fix structure, the cheapest on-page win. Put the answer in the first sentence of each section, phrase headings as the questions people ask, and break claims into lists. ChatGPT pulls from the first clear, attributable statement it finds.

Authority is the slow one, and you cannot shortcut it. Being present on Wikipedia where you genuinely meet notability, and being talked about on Reddit, puts you on the two domains ChatGPT quotes most.

Your best Google page can be a total stranger to Bing. Until you fix that, the clever on-page tactics have nothing to work with, because ChatGPT never sees the page at all.The part nobody checks

What content and domains does ChatGPT cite most?

Wikipedia and Reddit dominate, and everything else is fragmented. A 5W Research synthesis of nine datasets found that Wikipedia (13.15%) and Reddit (11.97%) drive about 25% of US ChatGPT citations, while no other domain tops roughly 3%. Big outlets like the WSJ, NYT, and Bloomberg did not even crack the top 20.

Wikipedia at about 13 percent and Reddit at about 12 percent together drive roughly a quarter of US ChatGPT citations; no other domain exceeds about 3 percent, and major news outlets do not appear in the top 20.
Two domains carry a quarter of citations. The long tail is everyone else.

One caveat worth holding onto: these shares move fast. Semrush tracked ChatGPT citing Reddit in roughly 60% of responses in early August 2025, then collapsing near 10% by mid-September. Chase the pattern, not the exact percentage, and do not bet the whole strategy on one domain.

Should you allow OpenAI crawlers in robots.txt?

Allow OAI-SearchBot if you want to appear in ChatGPT Search. OpenAI runs separate crawlers for separate jobs: OAI-SearchBot fetches pages for the search feature and respects robots.txt, GPTBot gathers training data, and ChatGPT-User is the user-triggered agent. Blocking GPTBot keeps you out of training but does not affect search; blocking OAI-SearchBot removes you from ChatGPT Search entirely.

OpenAI runs three crawlers: OAI-SearchBot for the search feature which respects robots.txt, GPTBot for training data, and ChatGPT-User for user-triggered browsing. Allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in ChatGPT Search.
Three bots, three jobs. Search visibility rides on OAI-SearchBot.
The training and search decisions are separate, and you can make them separately. If you want the citation but not the training use, allow OAI-SearchBot and block GPTBot. We break down the tradeoffs in our GPTBot allow-or-block guide.

How is ChatGPT SEO different from Google SEO?

The difference is the index. Google SEO chases the top ranking on Google and rewards backlinks and keywords. ChatGPT SEO chases inclusion in the answer through Bing, and rewards Bing indexing, answer-first structure, and presence on the sites it cites. The overlap is genuine content quality, but a page can rank well on Google and be invisible in ChatGPT if it is weak or missing in Bing.

Google SEO targets the number one ranking on Google's index and rewards backlinks and keywords; ChatGPT SEO targets inclusion in the answer through Bing's index and rewards Bing indexing, answer-first structure, and Wikipedia and Reddit presence.
Two indexes, two playbooks. Most brands optimize one and forget the other.

This is also what separates ChatGPT from Google AI Mode, which reads Google own index and fans a query out into many searches. Optimize Bing for ChatGPT, optimize Google for AI Mode. The full contrast is in our Google AI Mode SEO playbook and the cross-engine AI search optimization guide.

How do you measure whether ChatGPT cites you?

You measure it by running your target prompts through ChatGPT and recording whether your domain shows up in the cited sources, then tracking that over time. A one-off check tells you almost nothing, because ChatGPT answers vary by user and shift week to week. An API that queries ChatGPT and parses the citations gives you a repeatable share-of-citations baseline you can watch as you optimize.

Almost nobody does this part, which is odd, because it is the only proof the rest of the work paid off. Without it you are shipping changes into a black box and hoping.

Frequently asked questions

What is ChatGPT SEO?
ChatGPT SEO is the work of optimizing your content to be mentioned and cited inside ChatGPT answers, rather than ranked in a list of links. When ChatGPT searches the web, it retrieves pages through Bing, writes an answer, and cites a few sources. The goal shifts from ranking first on Google to being one of the pages ChatGPT quotes.
Does ChatGPT use Bing or Google to find sources?
Bing. ChatGPT Search retrieves live web results primarily through Microsoft Bing plus data partners, not Google. Seer Interactive found 87% of ChatGPT Search citations matched Bing top organic results, versus 56% for Google. The practical rule: if your page is not in Bing index, ChatGPT Search effectively cannot cite it, no matter how well you rank on Google.
How do I get cited by ChatGPT?
Get indexed and ranking in Bing first, since that is the pool ChatGPT draws from. Use IndexNow to push new pages to Bing fast. Then lead each section with a direct, self-contained answer, because ChatGPT lifts most citations from the top of a page. Build presence on Wikipedia and Reddit, the two domains it cites most, and earn third-party authority.
What sites does ChatGPT cite most?
Wikipedia and Reddit. A 5W Research synthesis found Wikipedia (13.15%) and Reddit (11.97%) together drive about 25% of US ChatGPT citations, and no other domain exceeds roughly 3%. Major outlets like the WSJ, NYT, and Bloomberg did not appear in the top 20. Citation shares also swing sharply month to month, so treat any single number as a snapshot.
Should I allow OpenAI crawlers in robots.txt?
Allow OAI-SearchBot if you want to appear in ChatGPT Search, since it fetches pages for the search feature and respects robots.txt. GPTBot is separate and used for training, and ChatGPT-User is the user-triggered agent. Blocking GPTBot does not block search visibility, but blocking OAI-SearchBot removes you from ChatGPT Search results. Decide the two separately.
Is ChatGPT SEO different from Google SEO?
Yes, mainly because of the index. Google SEO chases the top ranking on Google and rewards backlinks and keywords. ChatGPT SEO chases inclusion in the answer through Bing, and rewards Bing indexing, answer-first structure, and presence on Wikipedia and Reddit. A page can rank on Google and be invisible in ChatGPT if it is weak or missing in Bing.
